beads

a teaspoon of sugar today, with milk
she usually takes it black
sweet granular, the deeper the fall
bottom feeding on leftovers
tired eyes:
Open.

----

she's thinking
about the woman with beads
around her neck, a disc of patterns
traditional adornments
with a sweater underneath to keep her warm
in this bitter cold country
wind would bite through the thin, delicate fabric of her shawl
cut right through
her first visit
a bulky sweater and a million beads
every colour
but the gold and red stand out between yellow and white
she gave the girl a star, jewellery
to remember this day

---

and the wind cut through the girl but the coffee keeps her warm
